AMAA Director Receives Presidential Community Service Award

As a child growing up in eastern North Carolina, Grandmaster Jessie Bowen's priorities were family, god, and helping others. This lifelong principle was recognized at Take Center Stage Author Journey as part of the Action on Film Festival in Las Vegas Nevada, where Grandmaster Jessie Bowen received the presidential award for community service, signed by President Joe Biden. The President's Volunteer Service Award honors outstanding volunteers and recognizes the impact they make.
Grandmaster Jessie Bowen opened his martial art school in Durham in 1980. For over 38years, he worked to make a positive impact in the community by bringing a positive message to his students, parents, and the business community. In 1984, Jessie Bowen. became Sports Coordinator for North Carolina amateur sports, volunteering his time to promote martial arts as a part of the state games. The games hosted their first event, in 1986, Jessie went on to be the Sports Coordinator for the United StatesOlympic Committee in 1986 volunteering his event management skills to coordinate the 1987 Olympic Festival Taekwondo event. Through his community support, volunteering energy, and financial resources in the school system, and providing training for underprivileged kids and battered women.
Giving is an everyday practice at Karate International, where students learn about international giving and how to support people all over the world who have been affected by the tragedy. Karate International gave nearly $18,000 to the Red Cross in 2004 to assist survivors of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. At least 225,000 people were killed in the tsunami, which struck a dozen nations including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, and Thailand. In 2005, Karate International donated nearly $15,000 to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
These are just a few examples of Jessie Bowen's contributions to the community and the world.
