UK helps USA for Adoption of BIM strategies

The BIM adoption strategies in USA has been inspirational for UK. They are striving to incorporate the efficient practices in all the public-sector construction. NIBS has set goal to improve the BIM adoption in their country in the next few years.

Recently BIM has gotten enough prominence in the UK for its various strategies pertaining to BIM. This has made them an iconoclast and encouraged many other countries to adopt their doings. The perspective of the United Kingdom on BIM, has stimulated the United States to develop and strategize their BIM as per them.

Gavin Bonner, the global manager of BIM at Cundall said that during his travels to countries like China and Middle East, he has always heard of the UK model for building information modelling especially in the public construction project and he believed that soon this will be adopted by many other countries.

It was compulsory from the UK government side that all the projects taken by the central was supposed to use BIM level 2. This was to ensure that the building information was developed in a cooperative and comprehensive manner which had 3D data attached along. In every model type this was enabled. Even in the budget of 2016, the government emphasized on the importance of BIM. And their goal was to start using BIM level 3 soon in all their upcoming construction projects.

Earlier this year NIBS (National Institute of Building Sciences), head of International at the center of Digital built Britain, Adam Matthews mentioned in a conference about the UK’s perspective on BIM and said that the model can be looked up to for adopting it in the US. He made it clear that they appreciate what the UK had done in terms of BIM.

A. Matthews stated “We have started to look at what way we can drive savings. This was not something only for technology.”

He mentioned the government's plans and said that they aim to cut down the cost of the initial stage of construction by 33% by 2025. And for the life cost of a building assets by 50%. They also plan on effective and fast delivery networks.

That conference was attended by many prominent officials of the USA public sector. The officials of Google, Amazon, Autodesk, Microsoft, Bentley were present along with The General service administration and Federal Highway administration, department of state, Army Corps of engineers.

NIBS is a non-profit organisation (NCO) who works in the development of safer buildings and creates opportunities to lower the cost. They try to bring in the stakeholders together with the industry, Government and customers, to present an all-round development. They have very well planned and designed a successful National BIM standard for the USA. They have also regularly provided information and updates on adaptable BIM practices. They are quite popular globally for their downloadable standards, but have certainly not been able to implement those in their country of origin.

According to a 2017 survey, it was mentioned that the UK clients in the public sector have been disappointed with the implementation and development of BIM in the public sector. The professionals criticized the general clients present in the public as well as private sector of not understanding the use of BIM properly. They also showed a lack of knowledge in the documentation of information.

NIBS has successfully adopted the US National standard for BIM. There was tremendous effort by the volunteers behind this creation but the standards were not comprehensive and lacked coordination.

Recently, NIBS has been the sole head in leading the national BIM program. Through that they aim to create a national solution for the digital standards procedure. This will in turn help in the business efficiency, better project results, and fast movement of the supply chain, ideate new developments and will provide overall efficiency in working.
