What is A333 Gr 6 carbon steel pipe?

The A333 Gr 6 Carbon steel pipe is a low temperature carbon steel pipe (LTCS) that is ASTM A333/A333M standard. The ASTM A333(ASME S/A-333) piping class allows for cryogenic service, and this specification almost entirely covers seamless nominal (average) wall thickness piping. The A333 pipe has nine different grades, denoted by the numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. The Gr 6 designation refers to the grade of steel that meets the requirements of ASTM A333 standard.

This type of pipe is mainly used for pressure pipes, boiler pipes and other low-temperature equipment in low-temperature environments (usually higher than -45°C). Its outstanding characteristics are good low temperature toughness, high strength and excellent welding performance, widely used in oil, natural gas, chemical, electric power and other industries.

Manufacturing method
The A333 Gr 6 carbon steel pipes are mainly manufactured by means of seamless (SMLS) or Welded (Welded) processes, and no filler metal is added during the welding process.

Manganese (Mn) : 0.29-1.06.
Sulfur (S) : ≤0.025.
Phosphorus (P) : ≤0.025.
Silicon (Si) : ≤0.10.

Note: For every 0.01% reduction in carbon content (below 0.30%), manganese content can be increased by 0.05% (above 1.06%), up to 1.35%.

Mechanical testing of A333 carbon steel pipe

Transverse or longitudinal tensile and flattening tests, hardness tests or bending tests for materials heat treated in batch furnaces, 5% of the pipes in each batch should be tested. For small batches, at least one pipe should be tested. For materials heat treated by a continuous process, a sufficient number of pipes shall be tested to constitute 5% of the lot, but in no case less than 2 pipes. A single notched rod impact test is performed on the sample taken from the finished pipe, consisting of the destruction of three samples from each stroke represented in the heat treatment load.
