Tee is a common pipe fitting, usually used for pipe branch. Carbon steel tees are widely used in industries such as petroleum, chemical engineering, water supply and drainage, boilers, and shipbuilding due to their high strength, good pressure resistance, and low cost. According to the connection method, it can be divided into:
1. Carbon steel butt-welded tee:
Structure and connection: After the three pipe ends pass through bevels, they are directly welded to the main pipeline by butt welding process.
Features: Smooth weld seam, high strength, no protruding inner lip, and low fluid resistance; Suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure and large-diameter systems.
Disadvantages: The installation has high requirements for the welding groove and welding process, and the construction cost and time are relatively large.
2. Carbon steel socket welding tee:
Structure and connection: Insert the pipe into the socket at the end of the three-way pipe, and then perform ring welding at the interface.
Features: The installation process is relatively simple and no beveling equipment is required. It is suitable for small-diameter (usually ≤2 ") and high-pressure pipelines.
Disadvantages: The inner diameter at the socket has slightly changed, and the flow resistance is slightly higher. Not suitable for large-diameter pipes.
3. Carbon steel threaded tee:
Structure and connection: The three-way internal thread and external thread pipe fittings are screwed together without welding.
Features: Easy installation, reusable and disassemblable; The corrosion resistance depends on the material and protective coating, but its pressure-bearing capacity is lower than that of the welded type.
Disadvantages: The thread strength and sealing performance are inferior to those of welded connections. It is prone to loosening due to vibration and is not suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure or corrosive media.
Material type
Common material grades and corresponding standards of carbon steel tees:
ASTM A234 WPB standard: ASME SA234 WPB Chemical composition and properties: Carbon content ≤0.30%, with good welding performance. Applicable temperature range: -29 ℃ to +425℃.
ASTM A105 standard: ASME SA105 Chemical composition and properties: Carbon content 0.30% - 0.35%, quenched and tempered for strengthening, higher strength Applicable temperature range: -29 ℃ to +425℃.
ASTM A860 WPHY standard: ASME SA860 WPHY Characteristics: The pressure levels are divided into Gr.42/46/52/56, with higher yield strength. Applicable temperature range: -46 ℃ to +538℃.
Size standard

Equal Tee: The three-way branch diameters are consistent, making installation more convenient;
Reducing Tee: The diameter of the branch pipe is smaller than that of the main pipe, providing a flexible solution for system diversion and pressure reduction.
Wall thickness: Wall thickness is classified by Schedule (SCH), covering the entire range from standard SCH40 (STD) to thickened SCH80 (XS) and double thickened SCH160 (XXS).
Selection and application suggestions
Pressure grade: Select the appropriate material grade (WPB, A105 or WPHY series) based on the working pressure of the pipeline.
Wall thickness selection: Try to meet the strength requirements with the lowest wall thickness (SCH) as much as possible to avoid increased costs due to excessive thickening.
Connection method: For high-pressure systems, Butt-Weld tees are preferred. For low-pressure or small-diameter systems, socket welding or threaded welding can be selected.
Reducing Tee: When the system requires a branch diameter smaller than that of the main pipe, a reducing tee should be selected.
