Savannah Ice Cream Parlor turns 100

Leopold’s Ice Cream Parlor in Savannah celebrated its centennial birthday by having a Block Party last Saturday and Drug-Free World was invited.

SAVANNAH, GA – The block of East Broughton Street between Abercorn and Lincoln was jam packed Saturday but not with cars. Instead, there were long lines to get $1 dollar ice cream on a hot day in Savannah. Stratton Leopold, owner of Leopold’s Ice Cream Parlor, closed down E. Broughton Street and placed several ice cream carts outside as well as the store being open to try and satisfy demand for the timeless recipe that has been passed on to him. The lines moved fast but not as fast as some of his invited guests that were there to entertain the crowd. Somehow Larry “Gator” Rivers, Harlem Globetrotter Legend, can still move faster than an alligator taking a bite of supper. He started showing his tricks such as throwing the ball high in the air and catching it. But not with his hands, no way, he caught it on the back of his neck then with outstretched arms linked together to make a circle in front of him, he rolled the ball around 360 degrees finally catching it, only to launch into another ball skill trick.  Next the basketball goal was set up for all the boys and girls to shoot free-throws. When they made the shot, sometimes it took several attempts, each child received a turquoise hat or t-shirt courtesy of Drug-Free World-Georgia. The Truth About Drugs booklets were passed out to the parents in addition to the young basketball players, passing on vital truth about all drugs including highly addictive prescription painkillers that led to 70,000 people overdosing in 2017 (Source: CDC Wonder).
