Georgia school makes history at Harvard University.

Vickery Creek Middle school represents state of Georgia at Harvard University Science Olympiad Invitational

Atlanta, GA, February 11th, 2019. Members of the Science Olympiad team from Vickery Creek Middle School (VCMS) in Cumming, GA gathered at the prestigious Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) on Sunday, February 10th, 2019 to participate in the Harvard Undergraduate Science Olympiad Division B Invitational hosted by the University. Approximately 450 students, 32 teams from some of the top schools in the New England area descended for the event which consisted of science and engineering projects in topics ranging from Anatomy to Robotics. The Vipers of VCMS were the only Georgia school to participate in the invitation only event.

Vickery Creek Middle School held its own ground in an intensely competitive competition taking 10th place overall in the Harvard Undergraduate Science Olympiad (HUSO) invitational. The talented Science Olympians of VCMS were also awarded the top 10 of 13 events which included Anatomy and Physiology (10th), Density Lab (7th), Dynamic Planet (9th), Heredity (10th), Meteorology (9th), Potions and Poisons (10th), Water Quality (8th), Crime Busters (3rd), Solar System (3rd), Mystery Architecture (4th), Circuit Lab (5th), Road Scholar (5th) and Disease Detectives (6th).  Being a recently formed team taking part in Science Olympiad Division B competitions, VCMS made history by being the first school in the state of Georgia to take part in Harvard Universities inaugural invitational event.



About VCMS and its Science Olympiad team: Vickery Creek Middle School (VCMS) is a grades 6 to 8 public school located in Forsyth County, Georgia and opened in 1999. The current Administrators of VCMS are Principal Scott Feldkamp, Assistant Principals Van Lewsader and Elizabeth Ihle and Assistant Administrator/ITS Justin Mewborn.  

The Science Olympiad team at VCMS was formed in 2015 and has placed 1st at Regional Division B competitions multiple times since the team’s inauguration. Currently the school has 2 teams with 32 members being led by Brigid Savage, Coach/VCMS STEAM and Hina Patel, Head Coach/Parent Volunteer.  The team is also supported by other parent volunteers who guide in various areas.

About HUSO: Harvard University Undergraduate Science Olympiad (HUSO) is an undergraduate student organization at Harvard University dedicated to providing accessible S.T.E.M. education to K-12 students, with a focus in the New England area. To support this mission, they organize annual Science Olympiad Invitational Tournaments and conduct outreach to help start Science Olympiad chapters in local middle schools.

About Science Olympiad: Science Olympiad competitions are academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school). Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. The culmination of nearly 300 Regional and State tournaments the Science Olympiad National Tournament.
