Carbon steel pipe & tube (CS Pipe) is a steel pipe with iron and carbon as the main components. The carbon content is usually between 0.06% and 2.1%, and may contain a small amount of manganese, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and other elements. Due to its low cost, high strength and good processability, it is widely used in oil, natural gas, construction, machinery manufacturing and other fields.
Advantages of carbon steel pipe:
1. Low cost
Compared with stainless steel, alloy steel, etc., the price of carbon steel raw materials is low, the manufacturing process is mature, and it is suitable for large-scale application.
2. High strength
Increased carbon content can enhance hardness and is suitable for high-pressure pipelines (such as oil casing and gas pipelines).
Strength can be further improved by heat treatment (such as quenching and tempering).
3. Good processability
Easy to weld, cut, bend, and drill, suitable for a variety of processing methods.
Can be cold processed (cold rolled, cold drawn) or hot processed (hot rolled, forged).
4. Good mechanical properties
Good tensile strength, compressive strength and wear resistance, suitable for structural support, mechanical parts, etc.
5. High temperature resistance (compared to plastic pipes)
Can be used at higher temperatures (generally ≤400°C, depending on the carbon steel grade).
6. Coating protection
Corrosion resistance can be improved by galvanizing, epoxy coating, 3PE anti-corrosion, etc.
Disadvantages of carbon steel pipes:
1. Corrosion-prone
Main disadvantage: easy to rust in humid, acidic, and salt spray environments (Fe→Fe₂O₃, i.e. rust).
Additional anti-corrosion measures are required (such as galvanizing, painting, cathodic protection).
2. Low temperature brittleness
It may become brittle and prone to fracture at low temperatures (such as below -20°C) (low temperature carbon steel or alloy steel is required).
3. Heavy weight
Heavier than plastic pipes and aluminum alloy pipes, with higher transportation and installation costs.
4. High welding requirements
High carbon steel (C>0.3%) is prone to cracking during welding and requires preheating or post-heat treatment.
5. Susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement
In a hydrogen-containing environment (such as acidic oil and gas wells), hydrogen atoms penetrate into the steel and may cause brittle fracture.
6. High surface treatment requirements
If used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, special treatment (such as inner wall polishing and passivation) is required to prevent contamination.
How to make up for the defects of carbon steel pipes?
1. Anti-corrosion treatment: galvanizing, epoxy coating, 3PE anti-corrosion.
2. Alloying: adding Cr, Ni, Mo, etc. to improve corrosion resistance (such as low alloy steel).
3. Cathodic protection: used for buried or seawater pipelines.
4. Heat treatment: improve welding performance and low-temperature toughness.
Conclusion:
Carbon steel pipes have become the mainstream of the industry due to their low cost, high strength and easy processing, but easy corrosion and low-temperature brittleness are the main shortcomings. Reasonable material selection (such as Q235, API 5L Gr.B) and protective measures (coating, galvanizing) can significantly extend the service life. In extreme environments (strong corrosion, ultra-low temperature), stainless steel or alloy steel pipes should be considered as alternatives.
