If you live somewhere like Southern California, there’s a good chance you don’t use your HVAC system particularly heating for a large part of the year. The weather is usually warm enough so that it’s not necessary. This lack of use, however, can be problematic. Like all machines, HVAC systems need to be used and regularly maintained to stay in good shape.
One particular problem is the buildup of dust, allergens and other particles that can not only irritate your respiratory system but also decrease your efficiency causing higher energy bills. Here are some key steps you can take to make sure your system is always running its best.
1) Check the Air Filter
This is really the easiest thing you can do. With people who don’t run the heating systems that often they often forget about cleaning or replacing the air filter. The problem with that is even if you don’t use the system, dust and allergens in the air are naturally drawn to the filter. You’d be surprised how dirty it can be even after not using it for just a few months. Before winter starts, be sure to replace your filter and replace every month or so depending on heavy you use it.
2) Periodically Turn on the System
This might seem a bit strange to do in the summer months, but it’s well worth it. Think about if you didn’t drive your car for a few months, what would happen? Your tires might deflate and the battery might die. It’s the same thing with your system. Fortunately, even in summer, the nights can be a little bit nippy in SoCal. Running the system on a low-temperature setting for even thirty minutes once a while it will do a lot of good for the system and filter the air in your home.
3) Have a Professional Regularly Check Your Heater
Under that same principle, you should also have a professional regularly take a look at your system. It’s the equivalent of having a mechanic check out your car. They are much better equipped to check things like air ducts and other key features of your HVAC system to make sure it is running its best.
Just like the air filters, it’s a good idea to have a professional take a look at it before the winter months begin. Do note, this is one of the most popular times so plan ahead or have them come a little earlier such as in September. The energy savings and catching of any potential problems before they happen more than offsets the cost of a visit.
Solving the Challenges of Unused Heating Systems
As with all machines, heating systems need to be used and maintained regularly for them to perform their best. If you combine a DIY approach where you regularly check and change filters and periodically use the system even during warmer months with routine professional check-ups, you can ensure your heating system will always be running its best. This means reduced energy costs, fewer allergens and a cleaner, healthier home.
