Shanica Knowles returns to Lifetime Television in Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story that is based on a true story. Knowles joins a cast that includes Paige Hurd, Stephen Bishop, and Brad James.
The movie unfolds after Cowan’s husband's arrest and a family friend Musa (Bishop) offers to move her and her children into his home temporarily, Laura is relieved. She believes this kindness will give her time to get back on her feet. But overnight, this blessing turns into a nightmare when Laura and her children endure extensive mental and physical abuse and are forced into dehumanizing conditions.
Laura is repeatedly assaulted by Musa and held captive with her children in a garage. She later discovers she is not the only one he is tormenting. Despite the dark conditions surrounding her, Laura manages to keep her faith and documents her ordeal until she sneaks a note to the outside world, leading authorities to her eventual rescue.
The film will premiere in January and is produced by Poke Prod for Lifetime and executive produced by Sean Dwyer and Elizabeth Cullen. Manu Boyer directs from a script by Avery O. Williams. Cowan serves as co-producer on the movie.
Best known for her role as Amber Addison on the hit Disney series ‘Hannah Montana‘, Knowles‘ previous Lifetime films include, ‘Megachurch Murder’ (2015), ‘Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michelle ‘le’ (2016), ‘Babysitters Nightmare’ (2018), and ‘Christmas on the Menu’ (2020), as well as feature roles in the rom-com ‘Time Capsule‘ (2018), and on the long running soap opera ‘Young and the Restless’ (2018).
As a Singer/Songwriter, Shanica's first big break in music came when she won 1st place on "It's Showtime At the Apollo" at the age of 11 in 2002. She is excited to bring her own dramatic/music series to television where she will showcase her talent as a rising country singer in the tumultuous music industry.
Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story premieres on the Lifetime channel on January 18th, 2025.
