Hernia Mesh Implants

There are many bad stories about dangerous complications from mesh implants.  There are articles that even accuse doctors of placing mesh that is not necessary.  Hernia mesh is not to be confused with mesh for pelvic organ mesh.

Why is hernia mesh used?
Mesh is used in hernia repairs to function as a buttress for the repair. Hernia mesh can reinforce the repair and take off tension. This can decrease the recurrence rate. A cause of hernia recurrence is tension on the repair which can weaken tissue over time and the hernia comes back.

Don't fear mesh.
Not all mesh is created equally and there have been recalls of some hernia mesh products. When used in the appropriate setting under the correct indications, mesh is beneficial for the patient.
