Lawn bowl's answer to Twenty20 cricket launches in Guildford, Surrey
It's been described as bowls' answer to Twenty20 cricket. A new, fast-paced version of lawn bowls - featuring quick games, half-time bar breaks and prize money - was launched on Wednesday in Guildford, Surrey. "Top10" is a social-competitive form of the game aimed at attracting a wider audience to the sport.
Players can simply turn up, be drawn into a team, and play. In a break from the traditional white shirts and trousers, the dress code is described as 'strictly casual'. The summer-long league rewards those that give it a go – turn up and play and you’re guaranteed points.
The competition has been organised by 30 year old club treasurer Alfie Simmons. "What bowls suffers from is that it's seen as traditional, and just for the retired. In reality, bowls is a great game for everybody, and a perfect way for the after-work crowd to enjoy some friendly competition in the evening sunshine".
Organisers hope the league will spread to other clubs, and encourage the time-poor to enjoy a snapshot of bowls in their weekly schedule. For now, anybody wanting to play is welcome to Stoke Park Bowling Club, Guildford on Wednesday evenings at 6pm to join the only club running the Top10 League format.
