The Stonewall Chorale Presents the New York Premiere of “Quiet No More, A Choral Celebration of Stonewall at 50”

The nation’s first gay and lesbian chorus caps off its season with commissioned work commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots that launched the LGBTQ rights movement in America.

New York, May 15, 2019 — On Thursday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m., The Stonewall Chorale, the nation’s first gay and lesbian chorus, will conclude its 42nd season with the New York premiere of Quiet No More, a multi-movement choral cantata, at their concert “Quiet No More: A Choral Celebration of Stonewall 50,”  at Holy Apostles (28th St. & 9th Ave) in Chelsea.

This eight-movement work is co-commissioned by The Stonewall Chorale and LGBTQ+ choruses from across the U.S., including project co-founders, Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and New York City Gay Men’s Chorus. It is the largest collaboration in the history of LGBTQ choruses.

“As the nation’s first gay and lesbian chorus, it is particularly moving to present the New York premiere of Quiet No More,” said Stonewall Chorale Board President Michael Conwill. “Our existence as a group is a testament to the work of the activists and artists who came before us, and a reminder that we have so much more work to be done in the struggle for true equality.”

Quiet No More features the voices of six diverse LGBTQ composers and was written to commemorate the Stonewall rebellion, widely seen as one of the most pivotal moments in LGBTQ history. It not only tells the story of the Stonewall Inn that took place in New York City on June 28, 1969, but more importantly, celebrates the vast legacy and worldwide change that started from those events that June.

Artistic Director Cynthia Powell is “thrilled to have such a prominent presence in the global celebration of Pride.” Ms. Powell describes Quiet No More as “a beautiful collaboration that will delight and inspire audiences in New York City and around the world.”

Based in New York City, The Stonewall Chorale originated in December 1977 as the Gotham Male Chorus, specializing in Gregorian chant and Renaissance music. In 1979, women joined the chorus for the first time, and the name was changed to the Stonewall Chorale, the nation’s first gay and lesbian chorus. Over the span of its 42 seasons, the Chorale has become an important cultural presence in NYC performing arts.

The Chorale is led by Artistic Director Cynthia Powell. A graduate of Westminster Choir College, Ms. Powell has worked with numerous musical groups in the NY metropolitan area and has conducted many major works for chorus and orchestra. She is currently the Director of Music Ministry at West End Collegiate Church, and organist-choirmaster of Temple Sinai of Bergen County.
