64. SO HOW ABOUT GOD AS AN EXPLANATION?

The conclusion, then, is that the existence of the world is a phenomenon that requires explanation, and the explanation for the existence of the world is the existence of GOD, just as the explanation for the fall of apples is gravity.

Of course, what we are allowed to say about GOD based on this proof is quite limited — it is impossible to leap from GOD’s existence to the conclusion that He also commanded special prayer every morning. But still, it is of great importance.

And if the questioner asks: Why does the existence of GOD not require explanation? Why assume that it is a basic fact? The answer is that if we assume that there is a more basic explanation for the existence of GOD, we will not "gain" anything in terms of thrift. GOD is one, and any explanation can be no less than one, so why add such explanations to infinity?

In contrast, in the transition from the multiplicity of phenomena of the world to the oneness of GOD, we do gain great frugality in assuming the existence of basic facts, so we have a justification for doing it and an explanation as to the origin and sustaining presence of the universe as a whole.
