6.5 million UK men are balding - and we’re finally not too ashamed to do something about it: the UK’s secret wig renaissance

Balding has long been a source of anxiety for many men in the UK, but things are changing.

The once-stigmatised world of wigs is having a much-needed renaissance, and Matthew McIlveen, Education and Product Specialist at Scruffy Hair Co., has seen the wig industry transform dramatically over the years.

With over 12 years of experience in hair systems and adhesives, he knows exactly how wigs have evolved to fit the needs of today’s consumers.

“We’re seeing more people than ever choose wigs as a styling option - not because they have to, but because they want to. Wigs are no longer for hiding; they’re for showing up as the version of you that you feel most confident in,” he says.

“People are recognising that wigs are a tool - a way to play with their look, express themselves, and get that perfect style without the effort.”

And it’s not just those experiencing hair loss who are making the switch to wigs. From actors to athletes, CEOs to creators, wigs are becoming a go-to accessory for all kinds of people. Matthew points out that “most people you see on television, in film, or with large social media followings are already wearing some form of additional hair. Whether it’s full wigs, extensions, or toppers, it’s not the exception anymore - it’s the rule.”

With this widespread adoption, wearing a wig has gone from something that was once hidden to something that’s now embraced. It’s all about enhancing your look, no shame, no hesitation.

Matthew explains that, through Scruffy Hair Co., he’s working with a wide variety of clients. Women with alopecia are taking back control of their appearance, while men dealing with hair loss are boosting their confidence with stylish new looks. Drag performers and creatives are using wigs to express their identities in bold, beautiful ways, and busy professionals are discovering the magic of having great hair without the time-consuming styling.

“There’s nothing fake about doing what makes you feel like you. Whether you wear a wig, a hair system, or go completely bald - your choice is valid”.

Despite the growing acceptance of wigs, there’s still some stigma to shake off. Many people still feel awkward about the idea of wearing a wig, worried it might be seen as “cheating” or “fake.” But, as Matthew says,

“Wearing a wig is no different than wearing makeup, lashes, or a great suit. It’s a choice - and it’s a choice that can make you feel more like yourself. Wigs are tools for self-expression, not something to hide or apologise for. And with their natural, breathable designs and stylish options, they’re a far cry from the old-fashioned hairpieces of yesteryear”.
