LETTER TO THE EDITORS
We commemorate on April 30 the 50-year anniversary of the end of the Viêt Nam War. For the Vietnamese, was it "mat nuoc" ("loss of country") or "giai phong" ("liberation")?
58,000 American troops died. Over 4 million Vietnamese were killed. Millions of Vietnamese were orphaned and widowed. The U.S. bombing in Viêt Nam was four times that of U.S. and British bombing of Germany in World War II. The U.S. unleashed all its armaments on the people of Viêt Nam: Napalm, B-52's, naval aircraft carriers, cluster bombs, ordinances, Agent Orange. President Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger discussed nuclear bombing. The My Lai Massacre, where American soldiers killed over 500 Vietnamese babies, children, women, and men, was not an isolated incident. Such wanton killing of civilians was not uncommon.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his sermon "Beyond Vietnam: Silent No More" delivered at Riverside Church in New York City spoke out against the slaughter of the Vietnamese people.
The Viêt Nam War is a monumental tragedy from which we must learn.
Let us reclaim our belief in the sanctity of human life.
Chúc Nuóc Việt Nam Hoa Binh Mái Mái! May Việt Nam Enjoy Lasting Peace!
