During a meeting of the Environment & Housing Committee in October 2018, in response to an enquiry from Cllr Alastair Majury Council Officers confirmed that they would look to better utilise the secure cycle locker infrastructure that the council has, as well as to increase the number of lockers in areas of high demand.

Confirmed areas of high demand included Stirling Railway station, Bridge of Allan, and Dunblane, all of which have waiting lists for secure cycle lockers. Since this commitment was made the provision of secure cycle lockers has not increased at any of the existing sites. However, earlier this year Stirling Council treated themselves to a new secure bike storage facility for staff at the Viewforth HQ. Prior to this Stirling Council installed CCTV cameras at Old Viewforth prior to the re-deployable CCTV cameras that would help protect the public.

The council have now secured the provision of two ‘Smart Cycle Lockers’ at the cost of over £16,000 that are due to be placed in the communities of Aberfoyle and Kinlochard. Whilst discussions are ongoing the likely sites for the lockers include the vicinities of the village hall in Kinlochard and the tourist information centre in Aberfoyle in order for the equipment to be in a central location.

Lockers are rented out on an annual basis, at £25 per annum, and there are currently waiting lists for lockers at Stirling Station, Dunblane Bridge of Allan.
  • 20 Lockers at Stirling Railway Station
  • 4 at Stirling Bus Station
  • 6 at Bridge of Allan Station
  • 3 at Dunblane Railway Station
  • 6 at Dunblane in Tesco Car Park
  • 4 at Park & Ride, Springkerse
Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Councillor Alastair Majury Said:

“In 2018 cyclists who contacted me about the high demand for cycle lockers and I were pleased that officers had made the commitment to expand the provision of these lockers.
Officers said that they were looking into different funding streams that the council may access to bid for more lockers, such as the Tactran Sustainable Travel Grant Scheme. Sadly, two years later, after finding funding for a new locker to benefit council employees, and £16,000 for two new lockers. Whilst I am pleased that Aberfoyle and Kinlochard will benefit from secure cycle lockers, I am disappointed that the council have broken their commitment to cyclists in current areas of high demand, and I hope that they will now urgently increase the provision of secure lockers where there is a waiting list.”
